African Soul, Afrobeat und Highlife sowohl aus Ghana als auch der europäischen Diaspora, das sind die musikalischen Koordinaten dieser Sendung. Schon kurz nach dem Auftakt kommt dann die erste Neuvorstellung, eine interessante Compilation mit dem Titel „Africamore“, die vom Afro-Funk inspirierte Aufnahmen italienischer Bands und Musiker aus den Jahren 1973 bis 1978 präsentiert. Die Macher des Labels Four Flies haben wieder sehr gute Arbeit geleistet und eine stimmige Auswahl musikalischer Perlen mit afro-karibischem Flair zusammengestellt. Danach geht es weiter nach Leibzig, wo die Band Oluma ansässig ist. Die haben auf ihrem neuen Album „Cooking Time“ eine beeindruckende Mischung aus Afrobeat, Funk, Jazz und brasilianischer Musik geschaffen, die ich ziemlich überzeugend finde.
Auf das zweite Album von Jembaa Groove war ich schon ziemlich gespannt. Auf „Ye Ankasa | We Ourselves“ haben sie ihren Sound dezent neu ausgerichtet und einen angenehmen jazzy Vibe in ihrem Highlife Sound integriert. Das ganze groovt ziemlich entspannt und lässt die Sonne in unseren Herzen scheinen. Wunderbar!
Das Konkolo Orchestra aus Zürich hat mit seinem bereits im Januar veröffentlichten Album „Future Pasts“ schnell für Furore gesorgt und folglich war die Vinyl-Version schnell vergriffen. Inzwischen ist es wieder lieferbar und daher ist es auch höchste Zeit es hier vorzustellen. Eine solide Afrobeat und Highlife Produktion, die auch ziemlich nach vorne geht. Eine Reihe Gast-Sänger*Innen und Gastmusiker*innen runden dies noch zusätzlich ab. Ein großartiges Album!
Etwas elektronischer und vor allem club-orientierter ist der Sound von Sai Galaxy. Der australische Produzent hat schon vor ein paar Wochen seine zweite EP „Okere“ bei Soundway veröffentlicht und alle vier Songs sind exzellent. Auch hier sind zum Teil legendäre afrikanische Musiker mit beteiligt. Bei den beiden vorgestellten Songs sind zum Beispiel Rob und Steve Monite dabei. Diese EP von Sai Galaxy ist definitiv ein „Must Have“.
Die Reissue des Albums „Party Time“ von Papa Yankson ist eine rundum schöne Sache und dazu noch eine perfekte Überleitung zum nächsten Schwerpunkt-Thema der der Sendung: Die Compilation „Ghana Special Vol.2“. Nachdem bereits Kalita Records mit „Borga Revolution“ zwei interessante Compilations zum Thema Burger Highlife veröffentlicht hat, ist nun auch das Label Soundway mit einer exzellent zusammengestellten Compilation am Start. In den 1980er Jahren haben viele Musiker aufgrund der politischen und wirtschaftlichen Situation Ghana verlassen und sind meist nach Europa emigriert. Vor allem in Deutschland gab es auch eine starke Szene mit ghanaischen Musikern. Durch den Zugang zu Studios mit modernem elektronischen Equipment entstand hier eine neue, elektronische Variante von Highlife. Auf „Ghana Special Vol.2“ gibt es zahlreiche spannende Tracks zu hören, die in den Jahren zwischen 1980 und 1993 entstanden sind. Eine großartige Compilation und wichtige Ergänzung zu den beiden „Borga Revolution“ Compilations. Viel Spaß beim Anhören!

African soul, Afrobeat and highlife from both Ghana and the European diaspora are the musical coordinates of this program. Shortly after the opening, the first new release, an interesting compilation entitled „Africamore“, presents Afro-funk inspired recordings by Italian bands and musicians from 1973 to 1978. The makers of the Four Flies label have once again done a very good job and put together a harmonious selection of musical gems with Afro-Caribbean flair. Then it’s on to Leibzig, where the band Oluma is based. On their new album „Cooking Time“, they have created an impressive mixture of Afrobeat, funk, jazz and Brazilian music, which I find quite convincing.
I was really looking forward to Jembaa Groove’s second album. On „Ye Ankasa | We Ourselves“, they have subtly realigned their sound and integrated a pleasant jazzy vibe into their highlife sound. The whole thing grooves quite relaxed and lets the sun shine in our hearts. Wonderful!
