Abstract Funk, Instrumental Soul & Cinematic Sounds
Mit dezenten cinematischen Soul-Sounds startet diese Episode. Das Debütalbum von The Offline ist ein erstes Highlight. Hinter diesem Projekt steht der Komponist und Fotograf Felix Müller. Inspiriert durch die Eindrücke von einem Aufenthalt an der französischen Atlantikküste schuf er mit seinen Songs das klangliche Gegenstück dazu. Sein Debütalbum „La Couleur De La Mer“ ist pure musikalische Schönheit die sich in orchestralen Arrangements und soundtrack-artigen Sounds mit 60er und 70er Jahre Flair ausdrückt. Großartig!
Den cinematischen Sounds und insbesondere der Library Music haben sich Janko Nilovic, JJ Whitefield & Igor Zhukovsky intensiv gewidmet. Der inzwischen 83-jährige Janko Nilovic ist ein legendärer Library Music Komponist und seine Alben auf dem Label Editions Montparnasse haben in den letzten Jahren eine große Renaissance erlebt. Sein 2020 beim französischen Label Broc Recordz erschienenes Album „The Mase Of Sound“ war eine Kollaboration mit der Band Soul Surfers und ein großer Erfolg. Weitere Kollaborationen mit jüngeren Musikern folgtem diesem erfolgreichen Release. Für das neue Album „Cosmos Giants“ hat er sich mit Igor Zhukovsky zusammen getan, dem Drummer der Soul Surfers, außerdem ist JJ Whitefield von den Poets Of Rhythm mit von der Partie. Er hat letztens einige interessante Library Music Alben zum einen für Madlib Invazion und andererseits für Broc Recordz veröffentlicht. So ist es nicht überraschend, dass aus dieser vielversprechenden Kollaboration ein wunderbares Werk mit spannenden abstrakten Instrumental-Sounds entstanden ist. Ein Album das man sich unbedingt anhören sollte!
Auf das neue Album von Karate Boogaloo war ich schon ziemlich gespannt. Die Instrumental-Soul Szene aus Melbourne, rund um das Label „College Of Knowledge Records“, hat in den letzten Jahren einige interessante Veröffentlichungen herausgebracht, insbesondere die Band Surprise Chef habe ich hier schon öfters vorgestellt. Deren Alben wurden vom Karate Boogaloo Bassisten Henry Jenkins produziert. Die Band Karate Boogaloo wiederum ist sozusagen das Herzstück dieser kleinen australischen Instrumental Soul Szene. Das neue Album „Hold Your Horses“ finde ich durchweg gelungen und die Songs haben Charme und Klasse! Ein tolles Album und definitiv ein Highlight der Woche!
The Shacks wurden von Max Shrager und Shannon Wise gegründet. Die Band hat mich schon mit ihrem ersten Release 2016 total begeistert und auch ihr 2018 erschienenes Debütalbum „Haze“ war großartig. Leider haben sich 2020 die Wege von Max und Shannon getrennt und die Band war leider Geschichte. In den Archiven lagen noch eine ganze Menge großartiger Aufnahmen der Shacks, die das Label Big Crown nun auf der Compilation „Big Crown Vaults Vol. 2“ veröffentlicht hat. Ein großartiges Album, das für Fans der Band ein Must-Have ist.
Der Musiker Theo Schumann gehört zu den legendärsten Amiga – Künstlern der 60er Jahre. Wer auf der Suche nach DDR Soul & Funk affinen Stücken ist, musste eigentlich zwangsläufig auf die Veröffentlichungen von Theo Schumann stoßen. So ging es Johannes Riedel vom Label Golden Rules aus Leibzig. Als Ergebnis seiner umfangreichen Recherche liegt nun die fabelhafte Compilation „The Story Of Theo Schumann“ vor. Wunderbar!
Misha Panfilov ist mit seinem neuen Album „To The Mesophere And Beyond“ am Start. Zusammen mit seinem Septet nimmt er uns auf eine facettenreiche musikalische Jazz-Funk Reise über zwei Stationen in Form von den Song-Medleys dieses Albums. Zwei Teile des Song-Medleys „Mesophere“ sind in dieser Sendung zu hören. Die Musik von Misha Panfilov ist immer wieder ein wunderbares Erlebnis!
Kann man mediterrane Sounds und Surf-Gitarren fusionieren? Das liest sich erst mal unglaublich, doch hört man sich das Debütalbum „Sarda Sarda“ von Or Kantor an, dann ist man schnell von dieser einzigartigen Melange begeistert. Meine Empfehlung! Interessanterweise passt dies auch sehr gut zur Musik, die Hermanos Gutierrez machen. Die Brüder Gutierrez agieren eigentlich in einem völlig anderen musikalischen Kontext, der von der Musik Lateinamerikas geprägt ist. Auf ihrem neuen Album „Sonido Casmico“ sind die Beiden wieder in Höchstform und dazu hat Dan Auerbach (Black Keys) sicher einen guten Teil mit dazu beigetragen: Er hat das Album in Nashville produziert. Die Songs sind schlicht und einfach wunderbar. Viel Spaß beim Anhören!

This episode starts with subtle cinematic soul sounds. The Offline’s debut album is a first highlight. The composer and photographer Felix Müller is behind this project. Inspired by the impressions of a stay on the French Atlantic coast, he created the sonic counterpart with his songs. His debut album „La Couleur De La Mer“ is pure musical beauty expressed in orchestral arrangements and soundtrack-like sounds with 60s and 70s flair. It’s great!
Janko Nilovic, JJ Whitefield & Igor Zhukovsky have devoted themselves intensively to cinematic sounds and library music in particular. Janko Nilovic, now 83 years old, is a legendary library music composer and his albums on the Editions Montparnasse label have experienced a great renaissance in recent years. I was really looking forward to the new album by Karate Boogaloo. The instrumental soul scene from Melbourne, around the label „College Of Knowledge Records“, has brought out some interesting releases in recent years, and I’ve featured the band Surprise Chef in particular here several times. The Shacks were founded by Max Shrager and Shannon Wise. The band really impressed me with their first release in 2016 and their debut album „Haze“, released in 2018, was also great. Unfortunately, Max and Shannon parted ways in 2020 and the band was history. There were still a lot of great recordings by the Shacks in the archives, which the Big Crown label has now released on the compilation „Big Crown Vaults Vol. 2“. A great album that is a must-have for fans of the band.
The musician Theo Schumann is one of the most legendary Amiga artists of the 60s. Anyone looking for GDR soul and funk-related tracks was bound to come across Theo Schumann’s releases. This was the case for Johannes Riedel from the Golden Rules label in Leibzig. The result of his extensive research is the fabulous compilation „The Story Of Theo Schumann“. Wonderful!
Misha Panfilov is back with his new album „To The Mesophere And Beyond“. Two parts of the song medley „Mesophere“ can be heard in this program. The music of Misha Panfilov is always a wonderful experience!
Is it possible to fuse Mediterranean sounds and surf guitars? It sounds incredible at first, but if you listen to Or Kantor’s debut album „Sarda Sarda“, you’ll soon be enthralled by this unique blend. My recommendation! Interestingly, this also fits very well with the music that Hermanos Gutierrez make. The Gutierrez brothers actually operate in a completely different musical context, which is characterized by the music of Latin America. On their new album „Sonido Casmico“, the two are back on top form and Dan Auerbach (Black Keys) certainly played a major part in this: he produced the album in Nashville. The songs are simply wonderful. Have fun listening!
