Von Soul, Jazz, Latin und auch darüber hinaus reichen die musikalischen Koordinaten dieser Episode.
Zu den ersten Highlights zählt das vor Kurzem wiederveröffentlichte Album „Taking All The Love I Can“ von The Chosen Few, das urpsrünglich 1971 auf dem Label Maple veröffentlicht wurde. Die Band The Chosen Few stammt aus Newark (New Jersey) und ist nicht zu verwechseln mit anderen Bands gleichen Namens aus Jamaica oder auch aus Chicago. Ihr Album enthält einige veritable Soul Hits, die auch als 45er Singles veröffentlicht wurden und inzwischen gesuchte Raritäten sind. Zwei Beispiele sind das Titelstück des Albums und das bereits 1967 unter dem Alias Crown Four veröffentlichte „Love For My Girl“.
Bisher zumindest auf Vinyl unveröffentlichten Soul aus den 60er Jahren gibt es vom spanischen Label Soul 4 Real. Das Label hat aktuell die 3. und 4. Folge ihrer 7″-EP Compilation Reihe „From Detroit With Love“ veröffentlicht. Auch die beiden neuen Folgen halten das hohe qualitative Niveau. Einfach großartig was dieses Label so alles ausgräbt. Außerdem gibt es auch noch ein paar Songs von der ersten bei Soul 4 Real erschienen LP Compilation „It Hurts So Good“ zu hören.
Danach geht es mit ein paar neuen Veröffentlichungen weiter und es gibt einen ersten Song aus dem im Oktober erscheinenden neuen Album der Sacred Souls zu hören. „Lucid Girl“ ist wieder ein großartiger Song und bin schon auf das Album „Got A Story To Tell“ gespannt.
Joe Tatton, der normalerweise bei den New Mastersounds an der Hammonorgel zu hören ist, hat sich mit dem Gitaristen Lucas De Mulder und dem Schlagzeuger Luke Flowers vom Cinematic Orchestra zusammen getan und als Joe Tatton Trio mit „Galactica“ ein hochinteressantes Soul-Jazz Album veröffentlicht. Das klangliche Spektrum reicht von relaxten Mid-Tempo Groovern wie dem Rodriguez-Cover „Sugarman“ bis hin zu Hammond-Organ Funk Krachern wie „Double Take“.
Auch Koko-Jean Davis geht in diese Richtung und meldet sich eindrucksvoll mit dem Song „Love Child“ zurück. Auf das im Herbst erscheinende Album von Koko-Jean & The Tonics darf man gespannt sein.
Mit dem John Lemon Quartet geht es in Richtung Mod-Jazz, ziemlich tanzbar und definitiv ein Highlicht. Das Tramp-Records Sub-Label „Mo-Jazz“ hat „Yes Baby“, das ursprünglich in den frühen 60er Jahren erschienene einzige Album vom John Lemon Quartet wieder neu aufgelegt und es zusätzlich um einige Songs erweitert, die bislang nur auf raren Singles erschienen sind. Ein tolles Album und definitiv eine essentielle Wiederveröffentlichung!
Danach geht es weiter in Richtung Latin Jazz und mit dem neuen Album vom Orquesta Akokan gibt es ein weiteres Highlight. Die Band wurde 2017 gegründet und stammt aus Havanna. Dort wurde auch ihr neues, inzwischen drittes Album „Caracoles“ aufgenommen. Afro-Kubanischer Jazz und Mambo mit einer kräftigen Prise Soul, einfach großartig und ich bin absolut begeistert!
Poder Del Alma sind eine Band aus Nicaragua, die 1972 eigens für einen Auftritt als Support für Santana bei einem Benefizkonzert im Stadion von Managua zusammen gestellt wurde. Nach dem Konzert blieb die 9-köpfige Band noch einige Jahre zusammen und hat 1973 und 1975 zwei Alben und auch zahlreiche Singles veröffentlicht, die inzwischen gesuchte Sammlerstücke sind. Das Label Pharaway Sounds hat diese zwei exzellenten Alben Anfang dieses Jahres wiederveröffentlicht. Höchste Zeit sie endlich vorzustellen!
Das gilt auch für das grandiose Debüt-Album der italienischen Band Funkool Orchestra aus Neapel. Das Album „Latin Freaks“ war bereits 2023 veröffentlicht worden und schon kurz darauf bereits ausverkauft. Das Album musste nachgepresst werden und ist seit dem Frühjahr wieder erhältlich. Das Funkool Orchestra spielt eine Mischung aus Rare Grooves, Napoli Sound, Disco Boogie, Latin Soul und Boogaloo. Ein musikalischer Trip nach Nueva York und wieder zurück nach Neapel. Ein Trip der definitiv Spass macht und zudem äusserst tanzbar ist. Großartig!
Da wir schon musikalisch in Neapel gelandet sind, ist es auch naheliegend die beiden hervorragenden Compilation-Folgen von „Napoli Segreta“ vorzustellen. Die Musik-Szene von Neapel hat definitiv ziemlich viel Spannendes und bisher Unbekanntes zu bieten, das es zu entdecken gilt. In diesem Sinn, viel Spaß beim Anhören!

The musical coordinates of this episode range from soul, jazz, Latin and beyond.
One of the first highlights is the recently re-released album “Taking All The Love I Can” by The Chosen Few, which was originally released in 1971 on the Maple label. The Chosen Few hail from Newark (New Jersey) and are not to be confused with other bands of the same name from Jamaica or Chicago. Their album contains some veritable soul hits, which were also released as 45 singles and are now sought-after rarities. Two examples are the album’s title track and “Love For My Girl”, which was released in 1967 under the alias Crown Four.
Previously unreleased soul from the 60s, at least on vinyl, is available from the Spanish label Soul 4 Real. The label has just released the 3rd and 4th installments of its 7″ EP compilation series “From Detroit With Love”. The two new episodes also maintain the high quality level. Simply great what this label digs up. There are also a few songs from the first LP compilation “It Hurts So Good” released by Soul 4 Real.
Then we continue with a few new releases and hear the first song from the new Sacred Souls album, which will be released in October. “Lucid Girl” is another great song and I’m already looking forward to the album ‘Got A Story To Tell’.
Joe Tatton, who normally plays the Hammon organ with New Mastersounds, has teamed up with guitarist Lucas De Mulder and drummer Luke Flowers from the Cinematic Orchestra and released a highly interesting soul-jazz album as the Joe Tatton Trio with “Galactica”. The sound spectrum ranges from relaxed mid-tempo groovers like the Rodriguez cover “Sugarman” to Hammond organ funk hits like “Double Take”.
Koko-Jean Davis also goes in this direction and makes an impressive return with the song “Love Child”. Koko-Jean & The Tonics‘ album, which will be released in the fall, is something to look forward to.
With the John Lemon Quartet, it goes in the direction of mod jazz, quite danceable and definitely a high light. The Tramp Records sub-label “Mo-Jazz” has reissued “Yes Baby”, the only album originally released by the John Lemon Quartet in the early 60s, and has also added a few songs that were previously only released on rare singles. A great album and definitely an essential re-release!
Then it’s on to Latin jazz and the new album from Orquesta Akokan is another highlight. The band was founded in 2017 and hails from Havana. Their new album “Caracoles”, now their third, was also recorded there. Afro-Cuban jazz and mambo with a strong pinch of soul, simply great and I am absolutely thrilled!
Poder Del Alma are a band from Nicaragua who were put together in 1972 especially to support Santana at a charity concert in the Managua stadium. After the concert, the 9-piece band stayed together for several years and released two albums in 1973 and 1975 as well as numerous singles, which are now sought-after collector’s items. The Pharaway Sounds label re-released these two excellent albums at the beginning of this year. High time to finally present them!
This also applies to the magnificent debut album by the Italian band Funkool Orchestra from Naples. The album “Latin Freaks” was released in 2023 and sold out shortly afterwards. The album had to be repressed and has been available again since the spring. The Funkool Orchestra plays a mixture of rare grooves, Napoli sound, disco boogie, Latin soul and boogaloo. A musical trip to Nueva York and back to Naples. A trip that is definitely fun and also extremely danceable. Great!
Since we’ve already landed in Naples musically, it’s only natural to present the two excellent compilation episodes of “Napoli Segreta”. The music scene in Naples definitely has a lot of exciting and previously unknown things to discover. With this in mind, have fun listening!
