Female Voices in Soul & Jazz
Diese Episode von Soul Unlimited fokussiert sich auf Songs aus Soul und Jazz mit weiblichen Vocals. Den Auftakt macht eine Runde Soul aus den 60er und 70er Jahren. Anschließend geht es langsam in die musikalische Gegenwart. Das erste Album-Feature widmet sich dem 2024 erschienen Album „Gold“ von Cleo Sol. Auf ihrem vierten Solo-Album ist die durch das Musiker-Kollektiv Sault bekannt gewordene Sängerin in Bestform. Das Album umfasst zehn starke und sehr gefühlvolle Songs, die von Cleo Sols Ehemann Inflo produziert wurden. Großartig!
Die pakistanisch-stämmige Sängerin Arooj Aftab lebt und arbeitet seit einigen Jahren in New York. Nach einigen Alben auf kleinen Labels ist sie seit 2023 beim legendären Jazz-Label Verve unter Vertrag. Das in 2024 veröffentlichte Album „Night Reign“ ist ein Konzeptalbum, das der klingenden Magie der Nacht gewidmet ist. Dieses Leitmotiv wird in neun atmosphärischen und dezent arrangierten Songs behandelt. Über allem schwebt Arooj Aftabs einzigartige Stimme, die Gegensätzliches vereint: Rauchig und sanft zugleich, warm und doch entrückt, meditativ und nachdrücklich. Ein faszinierendes Album!
Auch hier in der Region gibt es beeindruckende weibliche Stimmen: Die Stuttgarter Sängerin Fola Dada wurde 2022 mit dem deutschen Jazzpreis ausgezeichnet. Nun hat sie am 7. Februar ihr neues Album „Sisters & Brothers“ veröffentlicht. Die elf Songs vereinen die unterschiedlichen musikalischen Einflüsse Fola Dadas zu einem abwechslungsreichen Album, das sich im weiten Spektrum zwischen Jazz und Soul bewegt. Ein wunderbares Album!
Die Compilation-Reihe „Praise Poems“ feiert mit der zehnten Folge ein Jubiläum und sie ist gleichzeitig das 125. Album das bei Tramp Records erscheint. Label-Chef Tobias Kirmayer hat sich wieder viel Mühe gemacht und sechzehn herausragende Songs ausgegraben, die in den 70er und 80ern aufgenommen wurden, aber bis auf zwei Aufnahmen noch nie veröffentlicht wurden. Das Album ist eine spannende Entdeckungsreise durch bis dato ungehörte Regionen des Jazz, Soul, Folk und AOR. Eine würdige Jubiläumsausgabe dieser zu Recht hochgelobten Compilation-Reihe!

Female Voices in Soul & Jazz
This episode of Soul Unlimited focuses on soul and jazz songs with female vocals. It starts with a round of soul from the 60s and 70s. Then it slowly moves into the musical present. The first album feature is dedicated to Cleo Sol’s album „Gold“, released in 2024. On her fourth solo album, the singer, who became famous through the music collective Sault, is in top form. The album contains ten strong and very soulful songs, produced by Cleo Sol’s husband Inflo. Great!
Pakistani-born singer Arooj Aftab has been living and working in New York for several years. After several albums on small labels, she was signed to the legendary jazz label Verve in 2023. The album „Night Reign“, released in 2024, is a concept album dedicated to the sonic magic of the night. This leitmotif is explored in nine atmospheric and subtly arranged songs. Arooj Aftab’s unique voice hovers over it all, combining such contradictory elements: smoky and gentle at the same time, warm and enraptured, meditative and emphatic. A fascinating album!
There are also impressive female voices in the region: Stuttgart-based singer Fola Dada was awarded the German Jazz Prize in 2002. On February 7, she released her new album „Sisters & Brothers“. The eleven songs combine Fola Dada’s various musical influences into a varied album that covers a broad spectrum between jazz and soul. A wonderful album!
The „Praise Poems“ compilation series celebrates its tenth installment and the 125th album released by Tramp Records. Label boss Tobias Kirmayer has once again gone to great lengths to unearth sixteen outstanding songs that were recorded in the 70s and 80s but have never been released before, with the exception of two recordings. The album is an exciting voyage of discovery through previously unheard regions of jazz, soul, folk and AOR. A worthy anniversary edition of this rightly acclaimed compilation series!
