Zum Auftakt gibt es eine kleine Runde mit instrumentalen und cinematisch anmutenden Sounds. Das Album „Thoughts Of You“ von Salvator Dragatto ist sehr stark vom Reiz der Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografie inspiriert. Auf seinem Solo-Debüt gelingt Dragatto eine faszinierende klangliche Reflektion der Emotionen, die von Schwarzweißbildern hervorgerufen werden. Salvator Dragatto ist der Alias von Joseph Reina, dem Bassisten der Band Jungle Fire.
Adrian Younge, der in den letzten Jahren vor allem als einer der Initiatoren des Labels Jazz Is Dead in Erscheinung getreten ist, hat nun ein neues Album auf seinem alten Label Linear Labs veröffentlicht. Das Album „Linear Labs Sao Paulo“ ist eine Zusammenstellung von Stücken, die künftige Veröffentlichungen auf dem Label ankündigen. Da gibt es vielversprechendes zu hören, die Bandbreite ist groß und reicht von cinematisch-orchestralischen Sounds wie auf „Human Absence“, über brasilianische und orientalische Klänge bis hin zu Hip-Hop, Soul und Jazz. Trotz dieser stilistischen Vielfalt hat das Album einen stimmigen Flow und macht Appetit auf die kommenden Veröffentlichungen.
Seit Joao Selva 2021 sein das Album „Navegar“ veröffentlicht hatte, ist meine Begeisterung für seine Musik stetig gewachsen. Nun ist sein viertes Studio-Album „Onda“ erschienen und es hat meine hohen Erwartung wieder voll und ganz erfüllt. Joao Selva stammt aus Rio De Janeiro und lebt seit einigen Jahren in Lyon, wo er den Musiker, Produzenten und Songschreiber Bruno „Patchworks“ Hovart kennengelernt hat. Die Zusammenarbeit der beiden ist sehr fruchtbar und maßgeblich für die großartige Musik, die auf diesem Album zu hören ist. Eine relaxte Sommerplatte mitten im Winter, wie die Autoren der Jazz-Thing Kolumne „Blue Rhythm“ treffend feststellen. Das Album der Woche hier bei Soul Unlimited!
In dieser Soul Unlimited Episode war Joao Selva auch der erste Künstler aus der sehr lebendigen Musik-Szene in Lyon, in der auch Bruno Hovart aka Patchworks eine zentrale Rolle spielt. Einige dieser Bands gibt es in einem kleinen Special zu hören, so zum Beispiel Voilaaa, The Dynamics, Mr President, The Bongo Hop, Pat Kalla & Le Super Mojo und Dowdelin, die gerade erst ihr neues Album „Tchenbé!“ veröffentlicht haben. Auf ihrem dritten Album verabschiedet sich die Band vom traditionellen Beatmaking und nutzt stattdessen live gespielte, analog auf Vintage-Maschinen mitgeschnittene Beats. Damit kreieren sie einen äußerst warmen und organischen Sound. Karibische Klänge, Jazz, elektronische Musik und perkussiver Soul sind die musikalischen Koordinaten, welche den Sound von Dowdelin bestimmen und einzigartig machen. Ein abwechslungsreiches und rundum gelungenes Album!
Ende November 2024 ist „House Of Spirits“, das Debüt-Album von Tom Noble erschienen. Ein Album mit einer sehr langen Entstehungsgeschichte, die sich über rund 17 Jahre erstreckt hat. Den Anstoß für die Entstehung des Albums gab es im Jahr 2007 und nachdem Tom Noble die Band Orgone kennengelernt hatte, sind erste Aufnahmen von sechs Songs für das Album entstanden. Im Anschluss daran nahm Tom Noble zusammen mit Darwin Jones und einem Gospelchor aus Tulsa Vocals für das Album auf. Doch erst 2013 begann Tom Noble weiter an dem Album zu arbeiten. Es wurden weitere Songs aufgenommen, doch sollte fast ein weiteres Jahrzehnt dauern bis die Aufnahmen tatsächlich fertig gestellt und veröffentlicht wurden. Gut Ding will Weile haben, könnte man sagen und das Album „House Of Spirits“ ist tatsächlich ein großer Wurf geworden!
Zum Schluss verabschieden wir uns von einer großartigen Soul-Sängerin: Gwen McCrae ist am 21. Februar 2025 im Alter von 81 Jahren gestorben. Ihre Musik wird für immer unvergessen bleiben.

It starts with a short round of instrumental and cinematic sounds. Salvator Dragatto’s album „Thoughts Of You“ is inspired by the charm of black and white photography. On his solo debut, Dragatto succeeds in creating a fascinating sonic reflection of the emotions evoked by black and white images. Salvator Dragatto is the stage name of Joseph Reina, the bass player of the band Jungle Fire.
Adrian Younge, who has made a name for himself in recent years as one of the initiators of the Jazz Is Dead label, has now released a new album on his old label Linear Labs. The album „Linear Labs Sao Paulo“ is a compilation of pieces that herald future releases on the label. There is a lot to be heard, the spectrum is wide and ranges from cinematic-orchestral sounds like on „Human Absence“ to Brazilian and oriental sounds to hip-hop, soul and jazz. Despite this stylistic diversity, the album has a coherent flow and whets the appetite for future releases.

Now his fourth studio-album „Onda“ has been released and it has once again fully met my high expectations. In this Soul Unlimited episode, Joao Selva was also the first artist from the very lively music scene in Lyon, where Bruno Hovart aka Patchworks also plays a central role. „House Of Spirits“, Tom Noble’s debut album, was released at the end of November 2024. An album with a very long genesis of about 17 years. The impetus for the creation of the album came in 2007, and after Tom Noble met the band Orgone, the first recordings of six songs for the album were made. Tom Noble then recorded the vocals for the album with Darwin Jones and a gospel choir from Tulsa. But it wasn’t until 2013 that Tom Noble began to work on the album. More songs were recorded, but it would be almost another decade before the recordings were actually completed and released. Good things take time, you could say, and the album „House Of Spirits“ was indeed a great success!
Finally we say goodbye to a great soul singer: Gwen McCrae died on February 21, 2025 at the age of 81. Her music will forever be remembered.
