Die musikalischen Koordinaten dieser Episode lassen sich mit dem Begriff Afro-Latin Grooves recht einfach zusammenfassen. Zum Auftakt gibt es eine kleine Runde mit nigerianischem Boogie aus den späten 70er und frühen 80er Jahren. In dieser Zeit ist auch das Album „Music Of Many Colours“ entstanden, eine außergewöhnliche Kollaboration von Fela Kuti und Roy Ayers, der am 4. März 2025 gestorben ist. Ihm zu Ehren gibt es den bemerkenswerten Song „2000 Blacks Gotta Be Free“ zu hören. Über 18 Minuten faszinierende Musik mit diesen beiden Ausnahmekünstlern.
Die erste Neuvorstellung kommt von La BOA und Tony Allen, dem legendären Drummer von Fela Kuti’s Band Africa 70. Das Album „La BOA meets Tony Allen“ ist auf Basis von Drum-Patterns entstanden, die der 2020 verstorbene Tony Allen 2011 eingespielt hat. Auf Basis dieser Aufnahmen haben die Musiker vom Bogotá Orquesta Afrobeat ihre eigene Vision des Afrobeat entworfen, roh und ausladend, aber auch mit großem Respekt vor Tony Allens einzigartigen Rhytmen und Schlagzeugspuren, welche die Blaupause des Afrobeats sind und eine zentrale Rolle spielen. La BOA erweitern das stilistische Spektrum mit lässigen Raps, Cumbia-Elementen und anderen kolumbianischen Grooves. Ein spannendes Album!
Danach geht es zurück in die Vergangenheit und nach Benin. Dort war Gnonnas Pedro in den 70er und 80er Jahren ein erfolgreicher Musiker, der aber außerhalb Benins nur wenig bekannt war. Nachdem Analog Africa 2009 vier Songs von ihm auf der Compilation „Legends Of Benin“ veröffentlicht hatte, ist nun die Zeit reif für eine umfassende Compilation der besten Songs von Gnonnas Pedro & His Dadjes Band. Die Musik ist eine einzigartige Mischung aus Agbadja, kubanischem Fon, Jerk, Highlife und anderen afrikanischen Rhythmen. Agbadja war mir bisher unbekannt, es ist ein alter Rhythmus, der bei Beerdigungen in der Region Le Mono gespielt wurde. Gnonnas Pedro, der aus dieser Region stammte, hat diesen Rhytmus angepasst und modernisiert. Er nannte ihn „Agbadja Modern“ und wurde so als „Roi de l’Agbadja Modern“ bekannt und beliebt. Die 16 Songs auf dieser Compilation entwickeln beim Hören eine besondere Magie, die mich sofort begeistert hat.
„Fintou“ ist das neue, inzwischen fünfte Album von Vaudou Game, der Band von Peter Solo mit togolesischen und französischen Musikern. Das neue Album hat eine musikalische Überraschung zu bieten, denn die Band hat ihren Sound erweitert und in ihre Musik kolumbianische Elemente einfließen lassen. Sie haben eine stimmige Melange aus Highlife und Cumbia entwickelt. Die Grooves sind hypnotisch und haben den für Vaudou Game typischen, mystischen Voodoo Zauber, dem man sich nicht entziehen kann. Ich finde das Album großartig und es ist die Platte der Woche!
Nach afrikanischen Grooves mit Cumbia-Einfluß geht es weiter mit Cumbia aus Kolumbien, der in den 60er Jahren entstanden ist. Das spanische Label Rocafort Records hat vor ein paar Jahren die kleine und sehr feine Compilation-Reihe „Cumbia Sabrosa“ gestartet, von der Ende letzten Jahres die dritte Folge erschienen ist. Diese Folge bringt sechs rare Stücke aus den Archiven des Codiscos Labels, die es in sich haben.
Nach über 10 Jahren gibt es neue Musik von Ray Lugo & The Boogaloo Destroyers. Auf dem neuen Album „Coucou Boogaloo“ gibt es astreinen Boogaloo Sound zu hören, der echt klasse ist.
Die französische Band Setenta, bei der auch der Pianist Florian Pellissier involviert ist, haben im Januar ihr sechstes Album „Apollo Solar Drive“ veröffentlicht. Hier gibt es Latin-Funk mit einer starken Prise Jazz, der richtig Spaß macht. Viel Vergnügen beim Anhören dieser Episode!

The musical coordinates of this episode can be summarized quite simply with the term Afro-Latin Grooves. To kick things off, there is a short round of Nigerian boogie from the late 70s and early 80s. The album “Music Of Many Colors”, an extraordinary collaboration between Fela Kuti and Roy Ayers, who died on March 4, 2025, was also released during this period. The remarkable song “2000 Blacks Gotta Be Free” can be heard in his honor. Over 18 minutes of fascinating music with these two exceptional artists.
The first new release comes from La BOA and Tony Allen, the legendary drummer from Fela Kuti’s band Africa 70. The album “La BOA meets Tony Allen” is based on drum patterns that Tony Allen, who died in 2020, recorded in 2011. Based on these recordings, the musicians from Bogotá Orquesta Afrobeat have created their own vision of Afrobeat, raw and expansive, but also with great respect for Tony Allen’s unique rhythms and drum tracks, which are the blueprint of Afrobeat and play a central role. La BOA expand the stylistic spectrum with casual raps, cumbia elements and other Colombian grooves. An exciting album!
Then it’s back to the past and Benin. Gnonnas Pedro was a successful musician there in the 70s and 80s, but was little known outside Benin. After Analog Africa released four of his songs on the compilation “Legends Of Benin” in 2009, the time is now ripe for a comprehensive compilation of the best songs by Gnonnas Pedro & His Dadjes Band. The music is a unique blend of Agbadja, Cuban Fon, Jerk, Highlife and other African rhythms. Agbadja was previously unknown to me, it is an old rhythm that was played at funerals in the Le Mono region. Gnonnas Pedro, who came from this region, adapted and modernized this rhythm. He called it “Agbadja Modern” and became known and loved as “Roi de l’Agbadja Modern”. The 16 songs on this compilation develop a special magic when you listen to them, which immediately inspired me.
“Fintou” is the new, now fifth album by Vaudou Game, Peter Solo’s band with Togolese and French musicians. The new album has a musical surprise in store, as the band has expanded its sound and incorporated Colombian elements into its music. They have developed a harmonious blend of highlife and cumbia. The grooves are hypnotic and have the mystical voodoo magic typical of Vaudou Game that you can’t escape. I think the album is great and it’s the record of the week!
After African grooves with a cumbia influence, we move on to cumbia from Colombia, which originated in the 60s. A few years ago, the Spanish label Rocafort Records launched the small and very fine compilation series “Cumbia Sabrosa”, the third installment of which was released at the end of last year. This installment features six rare tracks from the archives of the Codiscos label that have it all.
After more than 10 years, there is new music from Ray Lugo & The Boogaloo Destroyers. On the new album “Coucou Boogaloo” you can hear a pure boogaloo sound that is really great.
