A Contemporary Jazz Update
Umrahmt von jeweils einem Klassiker zu Beginn und am Ende der Sendung, gibt es in dieser Soul Unlimited Folge eine Reihe äußerst interessanter zeitgenössischer Jazz-Veröffentlichungen.
Als erstes Highlight kommt das neue, inzwischen vierte Album der australischen Band Menagerie, die vom Gitarristen Lance Ferguson angeführt wird. Er ist vor allem durch die Funk & Soul Band The Bamboos bekannt und er ist zudem noch bei einigen anderen Band-Projekten aktiv. Das neue Album „The Shores Of Infinity“ bietet mehr groove-orientierte Sounds als die Vorgängeralben, was dem Album insgesamt sehr gut bekommt. Es ist meines Erachtens das bisher beste Album der Band.
Ziemlich spannend sind auch die Songs die das Balimaya Project auf seinem zweiten Album „When The Dust Settles“ präsentiert. Eine eindrucksvolle Fusion von Jazzsounds mit westafrikanischen Roots von Nigeria bis Mali.
Das neue Album „Umoja“ von Nicola Conte ist ebenfalls sehr interessant. Der DJ, Gitarrist und Produzent ist ein profunder Jazzkenner und diese Kenntnisse fließen auch in die Musik des neuen Albums ein, die er zusammen mit dem Gitaristen Alberto Parmegiani komponiert hat. Die stilistische Bandbreite reicht von Afro- und Latin Jazz über Spiritual Jazz bis hin zu club-orientiertem Dancefloor Jazz. Die Liste der beteiligten Musiker ist beeindruckend, unter anderem sind Timo Lassy, Teppo Mäkinnen und Pietro Lusso mit dabei.
Danach geht es mit einem lokalen Talent weiter, das am Anfang einer vielversprechenden Karriere als Saxofonist steht: Jakob Manz hat mit seinem aktuellen Album „Groove Connection“ sein bislang bestes Werk vorgelegt. Abwechslungsreich, soulful und groovy! Man darf gespannt sein, was von dem jungen Mann in der Zukunft noch so alles kommen wird.
Experimentielle Jazz Sounds gibt es auf dem neuen Album „Soniqs“ von Sängerin Celine Rudolph, die bei Soniqs mit Sebastian Merk und Sebastian Studnitzky zusammenarbeitet. Das Kollektiv bedient sich hier nicht nur seiner traditionellen Instrumente, sondern ergänzt dies noch mit vielfältigen digitalen und elektronischen Sounds. Das Ergebnis ist außerordentlich gut gelungen und ich finde es sehr spannend!
Der musikalische Höhepunkt und somit auch die Platte der Woche ist das neue Album „Ulaan“ von der mongolischen Sängerin Enji Erkhem. Sie fusioniert Folklore aus der Mongolei mit aktuellen experimentellen Jazz Sounds. Dabei sind sehr persönliche, fragile Songs von unglaublicher Schönheit entstanden. Begleitet wird sie unter anderem von Paul Brändle an der Gitarre, bekannt von der Band Fazer. Zusammen mit ihm hat Enji acht der zehn Songs auf diesem insgesamt großartigen Album geschrieben.
Hania Rani’s Album „On Giacometti“ ist bereits im Februar erschienen, doch die limitierte Vinyl-Pressung war umgehend ausverkauft. So musste ich bis August auf die Nachpressung warten. Das Album enthält Songs die Hania Rani für den Soundtrack des Films „I Giacometti“ der schweizer Regisseurin Susanna Fanzun komponiert hat. Die Kompositionen basieren auf improvisierten Melodien, einfachen Harmonien und Strukturen, die von der Stille der Berge inspiriert sind. Wie immer bei Hania Rani, klingt dies wunderschön.
Die aus Estland stammende und aktuell in London lebende Pianistin Hanakiv ist mit ihrem Debut-Abum „Goodbyes“ am Start, das auch sehr gut mit dem Sound von Hania Rani harmoniert. Ebenfalls ein sehr schönes Album.
Der schweizer Schlagzeuger Florian Arbenz hat auf seinem neuen Album „Conversation #10 – Inland“ Musiker um sich versammelt, die in der Schweiz leben. Die Idee war mit dieser Zusammenführung ein abwechslungsreiches Album zu schaffen, das den Zuhörer auf eine Reise in verschiedene Stimmungen und Klangwelten mitnimmt. Ein, wie ich finde, sehr gut gelunges Album. Viel Spaß beim Anhören!

A Contemporary Jazz Update
Framed by a classic at the beginning and end of the show, this Soul Unlimited episode features a number of extremely interesting contemporary jazz releases.
The first highlight is the new, now fourth album by the Australian band Menagerie, led by guitarist Lance Ferguson. He is best known for the funk & soul band The Bamboos, and he is also active in several other band projects. The new album „The Shores Of Infinity“ offers more groove-oriented sounds than the previous albums, which suits the album very well overall. It is, in my opinion, the band’s best album to date.
Quite exciting are also the songs the Balimaya Project presents on their second album „When The Dust Settles“. An impressive fusion of jazz sounds with West African roots from Nigeria to Mali.
The new album „Umoja“ by Nicola Conte is also very interesting. The DJ, guitarist and producer is a profound jazz connoisseur and this knowledge also flows into the music of the new album, which he composed together with guitarist Alberto Parmegiani. The stylistic spectrum ranges from Afro and Latin jazz to spiritual jazz and club-oriented dancefloor jazz. The list of musicians involved is impressive, including Timo Lassy, Teppo Mäkinnen and Pietro Lusso.
Then it’s on to a local talent who is at the beginning of a promising career as a saxophonist: Jakob Manz has presented his best work to date with his current album „Groove Connection“. Diverse, soulful and groovy! One can be curious about what else will come from this young man in the future.
Experimental jazz sounds can be found on the new album „Soniqs“ by singer Celine Rudolph, who collaborates with Sebastian Merk and Sebastian Studnitzky on Soniqs. The collective not only makes use of its traditional instruments here, but also supplements this with diverse digital and electronic sounds. The result is extraordinarily well done and I find it very exciting!
The musical highlight and therefore also the record of the week is the new album „Ulaan“ by Mongolian singer Enji Erkhem. She fuses folklore from Mongolia with current experimental jazz sounds. The result are very personal, fragile songs of incredible beauty. She is accompanied by Paul Brändle on guitar, known from the band Fazer. Together with him Enji wrote eight of the ten songs on this altogether great album.
Hania Rani’s album „On Giacometti“ was already released in February, but the limited vinyl pressing was immediately sold out. So I had to wait until August for the repressing. The album contains songs composed by Hania Rani for the soundtrack of the film „I Giacometti“ by Swiss director Susanna Fanzun. The compositions are based on improvised melodies, simple harmonies and structures inspired by the silence of the mountains. As always with Hania Rani, this sounds beautiful.
The Estonian-born pianist Hanakiv, currently living in London, is out with her debut album „Goodbyes“, which also harmonizes very well with the sound of Hania Rani. Also a very nice album.
On his new album „Conversation #10 – Inland“, Swiss drummer Florian Arbenz has gathered musicians around him who live in Switzerland. The idea with this gathering was to create a varied album that takes the listener on a journey into different moods and sound worlds. A, in my opinion, very well done album. Have fun listening!
