On A Soulful Trip!
Diese Soul Unlimited Episode beginnt mit einer kleinen Hommage an Sergio Mendes. Der brasilianische Pianist und Arrangeur gehört zu den Musikern, die den Bossa Nova maßgeblich populär gemacht haben. Sein größter Erfolg war seine Version des, von Jorge Ben komponierten, Songs „Mais Que Nada“. Am 5. September ist Sergio Mendes im Alter von 83 Jahren gestorben. Er war einer der ganz Großen der brasilianischen Musik.
Danach geht es mit einer Runde Jazz Grooves weiter, um dann zum ersten Highlight zu kommen: Die 12. Folge der Compilation-Reihe „Movements“, die das Flaggschiff des Labels Tramp Records ist. Label-Chef Tobias Kirmayer ist hier mit enormer Leidenschaft und Begeisterung auf der Suche nach rarer und bisher übersehener Musik, die es verdient hat gehört zu werden. Es ist ein Wunder, daß es ihm nach so vielen Compilations die Schätze, die es zu heben gibt, noch immer noch nicht ausgehen. Im Spannungsfeld zwischen Jazz, Soul und Funk bewegen sich die Songs die hier versammelt sind. Die meisten Songs sind bislang nur als Singles und noch nicht auf LP, CD und digital veröffentlicht worden. Auch bislang Unveröffentlichtes, wie zum Beispiel die Villagers mit ihrer bemerkenswerten Version des Funk Klassikers „Funky Broadway“, sind hier zu hören. Wieder einmal, nun schon zum 12. Mal, eine großartige Movements-Compilation!
Spannende Musik wurde nicht nur in der Vergangenheit gemacht, sondern auch aktuell gibt es zahlreiche spannende Veröffentlichungen. Einige davon gibt es hier zu hören.
Benny Trokan ist in verschiedenen Bands aktiv, so zum Beispiel als Tour-Musiker in Lee Field’s Band The Expressions sowie bei den Jay Vons, Spoon und Reigning Sound. Nach einigen Solo-Singles ist er nun mit seinem ersten Solo-Album am Start: „Do You Still Think Of Me?“ Ich finde das Album ziemlich stark, denn es vereint die unterschiedlichen Einflüsse der Bands in denen Benny Trokan spielt. Garage-Rock Sounds treffen hier auf Soul und werden zu einer ansprechenden Melange vereint, die mir ausgesprochen gut gefällt. Ein tolles Debüt-Album!
Aus UK kommt PM Warson mit seinem dritten Album „A Little More Time“. Auch hier spielen Rhythm’n’Blues, dezent rockige Sounds und eine kräftige Prise Soul eine wichtige Rolle. PM Warson macht sein Ding sehr gekonnt und auch das neue Album überzeugt.
Deutlich souliger und entspannter wird es mit Thee Heart Tones, die soeben ihr Debüt-Album „Forever & Ever“ veröffentlicht haben. Die Musiker sind alle noch recht jung, um die Zwanzig, und haben zum Teil während ihrer Highschool-Zeit zusammen in einer Metalband gespielt. Inspiriert durch die Plattensammlung des Vaters von Keyboarder Ricardo Cerezo, entdeckte die Band den Soul und widmete sich fortan diesem Genre. Nach einigen Single-Veröffentlichungen haben sie nun ihr erstes Album veröffentlicht und es glänzt mit perfektem Lowrider Soul Sound der mich absolut begeistert. Großartig!
Auch Gospel-Soul ist dieses Mal im Programm: The Harlem Gospel Travelers sind eine junge Band aus New York, die von Eli „Paperby“ Reed produziert werden. Für ihr drittes Album haben sie Gospel Klassiker aus dem Numero Group Katalog neu interpretiert. Dies haben sie wieder großartig gemacht und das Album „Rhapsody“ ist schlicht wunderbar.

On A Soulful Trip
This Soul Unlimited episode begins with a small tribute to Sergio Mendes. The Brazilian pianist and arranger is one of the musicians who made bossa nova so popular. His greatest success was his version of the song “Mais Que Nada”, composed by Jorge Ben. Sergio Mendes died on September 5 at the age of 83. He was one of the greats of Brazilian music.
We then continue with a round of jazz grooves before arriving at the first highlight: The 12th installment of the compilation series “Movements”, which is the flagship of the Tramp Records label. Label boss Tobias Kirmayer is searching with enormous passion and enthusiasm for rare and previously overlooked music that deserves to be heard. It’s a wonder that after so many compilations he still hasn’t run out of treasures to unearth. The songs on this album are a mixture of jazz, soul and funk. Most of the songs have so far only been released as singles and not yet on LP, CD or digitally. Previously unreleased material, such as the Villagers with their remarkable version of the funk classic “Funky Broadway”, can also be heard here. Once again, now for the 12th time, a great Movements compilation!

Benny Trokan is active in various bands, for example as a touring musician in Lee Field’s band The Expressions as well as with the Jay Vons, Spoon and Reigning Sound. After a few solo singles, he has now released his first solo album: “Do You Still Think Of Me?” I think the album is pretty strong, because it combines the different influences of the bands in which Benny Trokan plays. Garage rock sounds meet soul here and are combined into an appealing melange that I really like. A great debut album!
PM Warson comes from the UK with his third album “A Little More Time”. Rhythm’n’blues, subtle rock sounds and a strong pinch of soul also play an important role here. PM Warson does his thing very skillfully and the new album is also convincing.
Things are much more soulful and relaxed with Thee Heart Tones, who have just released their debut album “Forever & Ever”. The musicians are all still quite young, around twenty, and some of them played together in a metal band during their high school days. Inspired by the record collection of keyboardist Ricardo Cerezo’s father, the band discovered soul and dedicated themselves to this genre from then on. After a few single releases, they have now released their first album and it shines with a perfect lowrider soul sound that I absolutely love. Great!
Gospel soul is also on the program this time: The Harlem Gospel Travelers are a young band from New York, produced by Eli “Paperby” Reed. For their third album, they have reinterpreted gospel classics from the Numero Group catalog. They have done a great job again and the album “Rhapsody” is simply wonderful.
