In dieser Episode von Soul Unlimited dreht es sich musikalisch im weitesten Sinne um Jazz. Es gibt kontemporäre, experimentelle, minimalistische und futuristische Sounds zu hören.
Als erstes Highlight ist Nubya Garcia mit ihrem neuen Album „Odyssey“ am Start. Sie ist derzeit eine der gefragtesten Saxphonistinnen der britischen Jazzszene. Auf Ihrem dritten Album (inklusive eines Albums mit Remixen von Stücken ihres ersten Albums) gibt es üppige Streicherarrangements, die der Musik eine neue und auch verbindende Note geben. Sie war schon früh von Jazz-Alben mit Streichern begeistert und hat sich nun selbst daran gewagt. Der Sound sollte groß sein, episch und cinemtatisch. Dies ist ihr bestens gelungen und es ist ein wunderschönes Album geworden!
Leon Phal, der aus der Champagne stammende Saxophonist, ist einer führenden Protagnonisten der futuristischen Jazz-Szene Frankreichs. Auf seiner neuen EP „No Pain, No Champagne“ geht er einen Schritt in Richtung eines Vintage-Jazz Sounds. Dem gibt er aber einen aktuellen Rahmen, indem er die modernen Bearbeitungen des Vintage Grooves mit Codes von Rap oder Elektro konfrontiert. Sehr schön!
Mit Apifera bewegen wir uns dann in eine etwas experimentellere Richtung. Auf ihrem zweiten Album „Keep The Outside Open“, das beim Label Now Again erschienen ist, bringt die Band unterschiedliche Einflüsse und Erfahrungen ein und sie verschmelzen Prog, Post-Rock, Psychedelia und Jazz zu einer spannenden und einzigartigen Melange.
Etwas minimalistischer, aber nicht weniger experimentell im Sound, ist die Musik des finnischen Duos Lampen, deren zweites Album „Halogen“ im Juli bei We Jazz Records erschienen ist. Das Instrumentarium der Band beschränkt sich auf Gitarre, Drums, Percussion und Sampler. Sie kreieren jedoch einen meditativen Breitwand-Sound, den ich sehr spannend finde.
Das Duo Poeji aus Münschen geht im Minimalismus ihrer Instrumentierung noch einen Schritt weiter. Poeji, das sind die Sängerin Enji und der Drummer Simon Popp. Auf ihrem Debütalbum „Nant“ loten die beiden die Grenzen von Post-Dub und Downtempo aus. Das Duo hat eine sehr offene Herangehensweise, ausgehend von grundlegenden Ideen, definiert die nonverbale Kommunikation Form und Tempo. Enji’s Gesang steht weniger im Mittelpunkt als bei ihren Soloprojekten, sondern dringt durch Hallplatten und Gitarrenpedale, während Simon seine charakteristischen Holz- und Metallpercussions mit Ketten von Bandechos und analogen Verzögerungen einfärbt. Das Ergebnis ist eine der spannendsten und auch faszinierensten Alben mit minimalistischer Musik seit langem. Das Album der Woche!
Wir bleiben auf der experimentellen Schiene und mit „Small Medium Large“ dem Debütalbum des Quintetts SML aus Los Angeles gibt es gleich ein weiteres Highlight. Das Album entstand durch die De- und Rekonstruktion spontaner Kompositionen, die bei zwei Live-Sessions im ETA in Los Angeles aufgenommen worden. In verschiedenen Momenten erinnert die Musik an Can, aber auch Elemente von Pole’s minimalistischem Techno-Dub kann man heraushören. Ein sehr vielfältiges und spannendes Album!
Die Bassistin Anna Butterss ist auch bei SML involviert und sie spielt regelmäßig mit Größen der kontemporären Avantgarde Jazz-Szene wie Jeff Parker, Makaya McCraven und Daniel Villareal zusammen. Nun ist sie hier mit ihrem brandaktuellem zweiten Solo-Album „Mighty Vertebrate“ dabei. Viele der Inspirationen aus den Kollaborationen mit den genannten Bands und Musikern sind auch in ihr Solowerk eingeflossen. Es ist ein wirklich großartiges Album geworden, das mit jedem Hören wächst.
Der Musiker JJ Whitefield ist in vielen unterschiedlichen Genres aktiv. Legendär ist die Funk-Band Poets Of Rhythm, seine Arbeiten als Karl Hector mit den Malcouns und jüngst hat er vor allem mit sehr interessanten Library Music Alben von sich reden gemacht. Nun hat er für Jazzman Records mit „The Infinity Of Nothingness“ ein bemerkenswertes Spiritual Jazz Album aufgenommen, das man sich nicht entgehen lassen sollte.
„Space Is The Place“ ist das Motto einer Veranstaltung, die am Sonntag den 13. Oktober (von 17:00 Uhr bis 22:00 Uhr) im Rahmen der Jazz & Klassiktage im Schlachthaus Tübingen stattfindet. Inspiriert durch die Musik des legendären Free-Jazzers Sun Ra und seinem Arkestra wird das Publikum auf eine multi-mediale Reise an die Grenzen von Raum und Zeit geführt. Eine einzigartige Mischung aus Musik, Kunst und Visionen, die den Afrofuturismus ausmachen. Aus diesem Grund gibt es in dieser Sendung ein kleines Special mit Musik von Sun Ra.

This episode of Soul Unlimited is all about jazz in the broadest sense. There are contemporary, experimental, minimalist and futuristic sounds to be heard.
The first highlight will be Nubya Garcia with her new album “Odyssey”. She is currently one of the most sought-after saxophonists on the British jazz scene. Her third album (including an album of remixes of tracks from her first album) features lush string arrangements that give the music a new and unifying touch. She was already enthusiastic about jazz albums with strings early on and has now ventured into it herself. She wanted the sound to be big, epic and cinematic. She has succeeded in doing just that and the result is a wonderful album!
Leon Phal, the saxophonist from Champagne, is one of the leading protagonists of France’s futuristic jazz scene. On his new EP “No Pain, No Champagne”, he takes a step towards a vintage jazz sound. However, he gives it a contemporary framework by confronting the modern arrangements of the vintage groove with codes from rap or electro. Very nice!
With Apifera, we then move in a somewhat more experimental direction. On their second album “Keep The Outside Open”, released on the Now Again label, the band brings in different influences and experiences and they fuse prog, post-rock, psychedelia and jazz into an exciting and unique melange.
The music of Finnish duo Lampen, whose second album “Halogen” was released in July on We Jazz Records, is somewhat more minimalist, but no less experimental in sound. The band’s instrumentation is limited to guitar, drums, percussion and sampler. However, they create a meditative widescreen sound that I find very exciting.
The duo Poeji from Munich go one step further in the minimalism of their instrumentation. Poeji are singer Enji and drummer Simon Popp. On their debut album “Nant”, the two explore the boundaries of post-dub and downtempo. The duo has a very open approach, starting from basic ideas, non-verbal communication defines form and tempo. Enji’s vocals are less central than on her solo projects, piercing through reverb plates and guitar pedals, while Simon colors his signature wood and metal percussion with chains of tape echoes and analog delays. The result is one of the most exciting and fascinating albums of minimalist music in a long time. The album of the week!
We are staying on the experimental track and with “Small Medium Large”, the debut album by the quintet SML from Los Angeles, we have another highlight. The album was created by deconstructing and reconstructing spontaneous compositions that were recorded during two live sessions at the ETA in Los Angeles. At various moments, the music is reminiscent of Can, but elements of Pole’s minimalist techno dub can also be heard. A very diverse and exciting album!
Bassist Anna Butterss is also involved with SML and regularly plays with greats from the contemporary avant-garde jazz scene such as Jeff Parker, Makaya McCraven and Daniel Villareal. Now she is here with her brand new second solo album “Mighty Vertebrate”. Many of the inspirations from her collaborations with the aforementioned bands and musicians have also flowed into her solo work. It has become a really great album that grows with every listen.
The musician JJ Whitefield is active in many different genres.
